Peter Schwartz is Executive Chairman and Founder of Demeure Operating Company. He founded the business in 2009 with a goal of transforming the travel industry based on next-generation principles of commerce.
Peter is skilled in responding to emerging trends in technology and commerce, as proven by his success as Chairman & CEO of SaaS-based B2B logistics company The Descartes Systems Group (NASDAQ:DSGX, DSG.TO). He led Descartes’ growth from a team of 6 people to an established global leader with over $100MM in revenues. Peter debuted the company on the public markets in the Toronto Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, with a $1B+ valuation. Descartes continues as a leader in its space, with 1000 staff worldwide and customers in over 50 countries.
After leaving Descartes in 2003, Peter co-founded Laurence Capital, a private equity and merchant banking firm focused on Canada’s emerging entrepreneurs, as well as on later-stage and public companies pursuing transformational opportunities. Laurence invested in some of Canada’s greatest entrepreneurs in over 15 exciting companies, including Achievers (I Love Rewards), Globalive (Wind Mobile), and Quickplay Media. Through Laurence, Peter continues to develop a number of interests in travel, hospitality, technology, and real estate.
The Financial Post named Peter in their annual Top 40 Under 40, at the age of 31. He has been a member of YPO since 1996, and in 1997 co-founded Communitech, a regional hub for commercializing innovative technologies that now generates more than $25B in revenue from over 1000 companies. Peter holds an HBA from the University of Western Ontario and is often called upon to speak on matters of technology, finance for emerging growth companies, and trends in commerce.
Don Tapscott is one of the world’s leading authorities on innovation, media, and the economic and social impact of technology. He advises business and government leaders around the world. He is CEO of think tank The Tapscott Group and has authored or co-authored 15 widely read books, including “Macrowikinomics: New Solutions for a Connected Planet”, “Paradigm Shift”, “Grown Up Digital”, and “The Naked Corporation”.
Don recently released (with Anthony D Williams) a TED Book, “Radical Openness: Four Unexpected Principles for Success”. In 2012 he created the Don Tapscott app — New Solutions for a Connected Planet, which is available for free in the Apple App Store.
In 2011, Thinkers50 and the Harvard Business Review named Don as one of the top 10 most important living business thinkers. At the University of Toronto, he is Adjunct Professor of Management for the Rotman School of Management and the Inaugural Fellow of the Martin Prosperity Institute.
John Bowey is Senior Counsel and the immediate past Chairman of the Board of Deloitte & Touche. Born and raised in Cambridge, Ontario, John Bowey obtained a BA in Economics from Colby College in Waterville, Maine in 1971. He then obtained his MBA from the Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario in 1973 and joined Deloitte in Toronto immediately after his graduation. He became a Chartered Accountant in 1976. He transferred to the Kitchener Office in 1980. He was admitted to the Partnership in 1983. From 2000 to 2004 John was the Tax Practice Leader for South Western Ontario and from 2001 to 2006 he was also the Regional Managing Partner for South Western Ontario.
John was elected to the Deloitte Board of Directors in 2002, was appointed Chairman of the Board Governance Committee in 2004 and was elected by the partnership as Chairman of Deloitte in 2006 and served in that capacity until his retirement from Deloitte in May of 2010. In addition to his Canadian responsibilities, John was a member of the global Board of Deloitte and the global Governance Committee and Audit Committee. In 2006, he was recognized as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario for his professional and community achievements. In 2008, he received his ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
John has several community and professional service engagements including board chair of Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, Governors Council for Opportunity International, Board Member and Audit Committee Chair for Brick Brewing and Chair of the Advisory Board for Simpson Seeds Inc.
Mark Rider founded The Rider Travel Group in 1982, with the vision of servicing the needs of business travelers while managing a corporation’s travel budget. Focusing squarely on the needs of the corporate travel sector, Mr. Rider created a company that grew from modest billings of $1 million to over $600 million in 1999.
During the last several years, through his holding company The Rider Group Inc., Mark has developed and/or fostered a number of new businesses in the fields of entertainment, technology and travel. An active angel investor subsequent to the successful divestiture of The Rider Travel Group, he is now positioned to add value to high growth organizations in a widening range of markets.
Mark has been a Board Member of the Invest In Kids Foundation (a national charitable organization) for several years and is director of a number of technology-based companies. He is also currently the Executive Chairman of Timeplay Entertainment Inc. and sits on the Board of Waterloo based Intelligent Mechatronic Systems.
Ken Teslia is a former partner and Director at GMP Securities LLP and brings over 25 years of senior institutional capital markets and venture capital experience to the board of Demeure. Previously, Ken has served as a Director for Credit Suisse First Boston and Xtreme Labs. Most recently, he is serving as Chairman of the Board at Wellpoint Health Services and is a founding partner and director of Extreme Venture Partners. Ken received his Master of Business Administration from York University in 1985.
