New record of overnight stays in the first half of 2016 in Austria
In the first six months of this year, overnight stays have set a new record in Austria. More than 70 million overnight stays were registered, which represents an increase of 4.2 percentage points. According to Statistics Austria, the increase is due to more tourists from Germany (+ 4.9%), with local guests, an increase of 3.3% can be observed.
Significant growth in the number of German and local travelers
In the early summer season, however, only a slight increase of 0.9 percent to 17.31 million overnight stays was registered. It is clearly evident that the Austrians like to stay in their own country; a plus of 2.7% is a strong signal for the Austrian tourism! It is striking that both comercial and private apartments are very popular, 6.1% and 4.8% higher occupancy, while 4- and 5-star hotels have a minimal increase of 0.4 percent. Noticeable was also a significant decline in the number of Italian guests (minus 12 percent) as well as with visitors from Russia (minus 21.7 percent).
Fewer guests in June
In June 2016 a total of 9.29 million overnight stays were recorded, representing a decline of 5.8 percent compared with the same period of the previous year, which is associated with an early Easter and many public holidays in May. In June 2016 was a strong decline in the numer of overnight stays in Carinthia (-10.1%), while the Burgenland reported a plus of 2.2 percent.
