Brexit- does it affect tourism?
Brexit, unexpected, feared and often commented. Fact is, the United Kingdom is about to leave the EU! Austrian tourism experts express their concerns and fear partially massive losses for the domestic tourism.
A significant impact is expected in the winter season, when almost two thirds of the UK-Incommings are registered.
The tourists from the United Kingdom are the fourth largest group in the domestic market, in figures: 875,664 visitors from the UK with more than 3.6 million overnight stays (behind the Germans, Dutch and guests from Switzerland and Liechtenstein). As before, a winter holiday is the British favorite, 62, 5% of all overnight stays are generated during the winter season.
Chamber of Economy Austria (WKÖ) is cautiously optimistic
Petra Nocker-Schwarzenbacher, chairwoman of the Federal Section Tourism in the WKÖ calls , inter alia, attention to the adverse exchange rate pound / euro and fears similar cuts caused by the difficult political situation in Russia and the ruble devaluation. Nevertheless the Chamber of Economiy is optimistic that any decline could be compensated because the domestic tourism business is well positioned.
Concern in the Tyrol – will British overnight stays fall up to a fifth?
The Tyrol, winter sport destination no. 1 is particularly concerned about the British vote. Jürgen Bodenseeer, President of the Tyrolean Chamber of Commerce speaks of a “severe slap into the face” for the entire economy, which particularly hurts tourism. He complained the rising of prices for British guests in Austria, also because the prices are already “at the edge” and hardly permit any elasticity. Even Fritz Hörl, Tyrolean Wirtschaftsbund chairman, expects negative Brexit-consequences, after all, every second Briton spends his vacation in the Tyrol. Overall, it is feared that overnight stays by Britons in the Tyrol could reduce up to one fifth, while the winter of 2015/2015 was still pleased with an increase of 3.3 percent.
Seekda predicts any consequences to compensate
The Seekda GmbH is confident that the impact of the Brexit is limited and advises its customers to unlock,if necessary, online sales channels in other countries. Dipl. Ing. Klaus Niederacher, CEO of Seekda GmbH: “We do not expect significant losses. On the one hand we have seen in other cases, that tourism is resistant to a certain degree, on the other hand Austrian tourism is deeply and exellent positioned . Let’s wait, we will see that the Brexit will last for years and will not lead to sudden significant changes. “Finally, one must also give the advice to diversify sales and to count on multichannel distribution.
Whether the Brexit will act as a brake for domestic tourism, will probably not known until a certain time, currently mixed to negative feelings outweigh in Austrian tourism experts.
